BYU football: Refocused Cougs aim to bounce back

It will be interesting to see how well the Cougs bounce back from such an
embarrassing loss. Brono states that the TCU game helped him redefine himself
and the program. He often said in years past, "Raise the Bar!" I hope
that he does that for himeself and the program. If he doesn't, he will
forever live in the shadow of Lavelle Edwards.

The cougars are out (of luck & time, that is).
Bronco likes to talk about how his program works at "raising the bar." Don't look now, but it appears instead of "raising the bar" Bronco is becoming more and more adept at "moving the bar."
Bronco always spends the offseason and preseason talking national championships and BCS busting. This gradually gives way every year to talk of MWC championships and Vegas Bowl wins. Eventually, this turns to talk about how wonderful it is that football is the 5th or lower priority for himself and the football players.
That's right, Bronco, keep moving the bar and you'll always keep the Cougar faithful happy. The average BYU fan will never catch on to the mystery of the ever downward moving bar.

It will be interesting to see how little brother does in Laramie after getting
taken behind the wood shed by TCU two weeks ago. After getting blown out at
home for the second time this season, is this team about to quit on Bronco?
Those two losses remind me of the CSU & Boise St blow out losses in Provo in
Crouton's last season in Cougarville.

No, you're right. Forget lofty goals that are totally unreachable. At the beginning of each year, BYU's goals should be to win most of their games, hopefully beat their rival, and sneak into a bowl game. Real ambitious, slappy.

"Raising the bar", "missing assignments and execution",
"one more lesson to learn", "execute at the highest
level"...... He is starting to sound just like his master Crowton, remember
"we are a young team", "inexperience team",..... always the
same excuses. How about "raising the bar" for the coaching staff, or
having somebody else make the "play calling" like Kyle did and playing
a new QB like Utah did, anyways we can't win the conference anymore, so
let's see what the new guy can do, at least he can't make it worse
than Hall.
What is hurting the team is Bronco's pride, it doesn't matter how bad the play calling is or how bad certain players are performing, he (Bronco) won't make any changes. The same small and slow secondary that couldn't stop anybody during the Crowton years (Bronco was the DC) is hurting us again, but still Bronco won't make any changes. But I guess we are going to get used to because Bronco is going nowhere, as long as BYU beat crappy teams, the Athletic Department is happy.

I predict that Wyoming will play them tough in Laramie. They always do. BYU
could lose if they come in totally focused on execution versus going after
Wyoming's weaknesses. If they don't have a specific game plan for
this one, Wyoming will win.

Rise and Shout, you are another boorish, pathetic, spoiled dufuss person. I was
going to say fan but you are not. The games are for enjoyment. It's just
a game. Go follow some other team that gives you warm fuzzies.

Tonga can't be serious in his comment about how well the team plays under
adversity and pressure. I would say that is their weakness. Every big game
except OK, they have folded big time, disappointing everyone, including
themselves. Credit them with the wins over mediocre teams, but against the big
ones in the conference or in the BCS, the Cougs need to learn how to handle the
pressure.

Why don't all of you try to play in front of 60,000 fans. Then get on T.V.
and face a huge in-state audience trying to avoid trashing your team and find
some glimmer of sunshine and optomism after another bad loss to a team of
lightning quick african-americans. You tell me exactly what you would say and
do to change things. It's a piece of cake for you know-nothings to sit at
your computer and trash someone you don't have to face man to man. Come on,
just cowboy up and be a man.

No one is a bigger Cougar fan than I am. But when looking at the BIG PICTURE, it
would be more beneficial to the Cougs in the long run if TCU wins out and goes
to a BCS bowl game over BSU. I would prefer to see BYU win out and finish second
to an undefeated TCU than see Utah beat TCU so that we have a chance at the MWC
championship only to see the WAC represent in a BCS bowl. As important as a MWC
championship is for BYU, the long term national rep of the MWC is just as
beneficial to BYU. To have TCU repeat what Utah did last season (instead of it
being BSU) only increases the chances that a great BYU team could actually play
for a national championship down the road. Let's all keep the BIG PICTURE
in mind. I'm guessing Mendenhall believes this too but he still has to talk
MWC championship even if he knows another 10-win season and second place finish
actually benefits the Cougs more in the long run. Go Cougs!!

I agree with you. I'm a LONG time BYU fanatic. After the FSU game, I told myself to not be TOO disappointed if TCU squeeked by BYU as long as they went on to do wonderful things in the post-season. My reasoning was that since BYU wasn't going to get into a BCS game anyway (barring the most unlikely miracle) it was best for us to have the MWC represented well by TCU. Of course, being pounded was painful. Hopefully we will win out the rest of our games and TCU blows everyone away, including Utah.
Looking ahead, I think Utah will play TCU much better than we did though and may even find a way to win. They're still playing for the conference championship and will be playing with more inspiration than what we showed (unfortunately). Regardless of that outcome, we'll certainly have our hands full when we play them and we'll be fortunate to get past them.

Please, people, no matter whether you're blue, red or purple, TELL me
you've had TCU picked to win the MWC since last season.
It was never going to be BYU, and Utah was going to have an inevitable drop-off. Every knowledgeable fan without a dog in the fight had TCU as the '09 MWC champ the moment they thrashed the Cougars LAST YEAR, regardless of what BYU and Utah did that year or this one.
Because Patterson and Mendenhall are quite consistent and have both reached talent plateaus, with Mendenhall leveling out below Patterson. In an up year, the Cougars can beat the Frogs. But as things stand now, the Frogs are going to take most of the games, mostly due to recruitment advantages and a coaching staff competent enough to exploit superior speed against BYU.
This is the norm--a tussle between Utes and Frogs, with occasional Coug years depending on program cycles of all 3 teams.
