Utah Jazz notebook: Sloan plays defense for Boozer
50 comments | Read story
Fez if he did not get so many fouls, then we could trust him starting. His play when in there stats or not do not show, Dallas had more problems getting to the rim. Barea does not get enough credit for quickness but beating DWIL to the rim like I saw tonight even though he missed is lazy defense. You can score 40 but if you give up close to that like some do at times Like Okur what value are they?
Again, some it is the players the rest SLoan philosophy.
I don't think it was all the defense that hurt Utah today in the fourth it was the lousy offense that let Dallas get the transition plays. Utah barely scored anything after the 7 minute mark they should have scored over 100 points with how much they had going into the 4th quarter but for some reason they stumbled once again in the fourth.
if Utah had kept scoring and playing there offense then it makes Dallas have to try to speed up the tempo which leads them to take bad shots and more turnovers but since Utah stopped scoring Dallas was able to keep it calm and build momentum, I think it had to do with Utah playing outside of their offense and not doing what they had been doing all game long.
All in all Utah had a very good defensive showing nobody can deny that that is until the fourth quarter once again.
Boozer chose to say he was getting a raise, no matter what, during the season last year while injured. He chose to do those radio interviews in Miami and Chicago, saying how much he'd like to play in those cities, while under contract in Utah. Of course people are going to be on his beep. What does he expect?
Boozer needs to grow up, grow a set, and play basketball.
The Jazz have absolutely no heart or desire at all. None. Zip. Zero. Nada. They have their big fat contracts and don't really care enough to play with the effort and intensity it take to win. Why play hard when they can loaf it and still collect their enormous paychecks?
I won't be buying tickets any time soon. If they don't care, why should I? Only a sap would keep rooting for a bunch of players who don't care.....
Nah ... it ain't gonna happen. Jerry's going to get his extension.
If anything, Jazz management are consistent in their decision making. No changes as long as the team is making the playoffs.
On defense it is the same predictable circus. Teams beat the Jazz with an inside out game. Bomb from outside slash inside if you can. The Jazz got out rebounded.
Are the players bad or lazy. For most that is not true. Other teams would like to have the Jazz players.
The philosophy and the game plan have problems. Bad game philosophy, game plans and refusal to adjust will make players look bad. It will also cause them to stop playing as hard because playing hard does not win due to the bad game plan.
Sloan does not adjust when he needs to adjust. He has never defended the 3. It is a permanent weakness of the Jazz and other teams exploit it. He struggles with fun and gun teams. There is NO interior defense.
Sloan is the primary reason for the losses. He chooses the players. He can't run his own system.
Jerry does not adjust but just tries to get tired players to play the wrong approach harder and the whole team gets kicked in the 4 quarter.
The big question is CAN or WILL Jerry adjust and fix the problems. So far he has not.
The problems are not with the players as much as it is with Jerry. He insists on doing it his way and it is not working and will not work. The good teams can negate his dated approach to the game.
Who cares about his offensive efficiency if the players he recruited can't defend. Who cares about his OE if his teams can't win if one of the players is injured.
Sloan has a flawed system and I have no faith in it until he proves otherwise.
Actually the system could be made to work with a better more adaptable coach and of course better more versatile players.
What do you expect for 82 million anyway?
The Jazz were in it till the fourth and that was after getting their lunch handed to them the night before.
No doubt they are still struggling but that will fix itself, till then enjoy the games because that is what they are. GAMES.
They are for your enjoyment and there was some good team play, great shots and for three quarters we owned Dallas in their building. Seems like we learned from our loss the day before.
If we won each night we would think we were invincible bnut it is good to see the team grow and develop and become better players. Brewer is much better now than he was 2 years ago so is DWill and Boozer. If we are patient we may even see some worth from Fes this season.
Don't get your shirt in a knot, you are not the coach and he is the one who has to figure out how to craft the players together in order to be competitive and win some that we aren't supposed to, guess what he nearly did it last night.
Keep watching, except for you Mr. Reality, I am sure your world is perfectly round
They are getting dominated by longer taller players almost every game.
We are spending 20 million a year on power forwards and they are the worst performing position on the floor.
Both of these guys will never be anything more than role players but we have paid them like they are allstars.
Defenses have figured out how to guard Boozer and life for him in this league is effectively over.
I think it is a bit of both. I also think that other teams, many of the good teams know how to break down the Sloan system and they know he can't or will not adjust.
Lavell Edwards was a great coach but eventually the game caught up with him and he lost his differential advantage. He quit winning and eventually retired.
You can make the case for Sloan as a great coach but you can also make the case that his system does not work anymore even with the players he hand picked to run it. There are not BYU recruiting restrictions on the Jazz. It is a free market and the Jazz can get the talent they need or want to pay for.
Every team makes a few player mistakes but the Jazz continue to have the same problems year after year. That is Miller, KOC and Sloan pursuing the wrong philosophy.
Please change.
He didn't rest D-Will and Brewer in the second half (they had both played 40+ minutes the night before), he didn't use his timeouts in the 4th when Dirk started to go crazy, he left Boozer and Okur together for the ENTIRE QUARTER while they got absolutely destroyed by Dirk, and he left Millsap sitting on the bench. That is just bad coaching, plain and simple.
The strange thing is that I think some of those things are actually fairly out of charachter for Sloan, like not resting D-Will and not playing Millsap in the 4th. I don't know what is going on with the Jazz right now, but I don't like it.
Sloan has won enough (over the years) to cover up his very poor game management. However, it is now getting past repair. Playing a hurt Okur against Dirk is the tip of the iceberg. Not calling time outs is lendendary. Playing Boozer when he has no reason to be on the floor based on consistent nonperformance is also typical. The veteran bias. The refusal to guard the 3. The refusal to use the 3. Insisting on playing Okur and Boozer in the 4th and pretending that is defense. A bias against the zone when you can't man up. I could go on.
Suspend Sloan and get Stockton to run the team for the rest of the year. He knows the system and how to run it. He will not show favortism to any player. He will adjust and should be a world class game coach.
If he won't do it then get Horny or even Avery Johnson. They could not be worse than Sloan.
The Jazz have to have better game management.
Don't think it will happen? It is happening as we speak, 4 games into the season. 1 lowly win against perrenial doormat Clippers (and even then the win wasn't secure until near the end) and 3 embarrassing blowouts.
You can add mayo to a poop sandwich but its still a poop sandwich and we are forced to eat it. And to add insult to injury, the Knicks will probably start winning and there will go our 2nd lottery pick (I think the 1st one will be in the bag by mid season)
but such is not true,
those types of players would flounder in sloan's system,
what good is having kobe or jordon if you still run a system that relies on the point and PF doing everything.
those player do NOT want to be standing at the three point line waiting on the point and pf to do their thing,
and it would be a waste of talent,
no, until sloan and his system are gone no players like a kobe or a jordon would ever want play here,
and jazz will never get the players you NEED to win championship until that happens.
while sloan controls all personel descisions, the jazz will always get the kind of playeres they have always got.
While sloan may be good running players through a practice.
he is and always has been the worse game-time coach there is.
the fact is, he has rode players like stockton and malone to all the regular success he has had.
I care about the way he is playing. Okur is playing well. Fez is playing well. Brewer and DWill are playing pretty good. AK sometimes and Millsap not so much. Boozer is playing bad.
Sloan is trying to nurse Boozer along. That is bad for the team. Boozer is not in playing shape. He lacks explosiveness. He needs to go to special training to get his hops back.
Boozer should not get major or key minutes until he earns them, ditto for Millsap. What is killing this team are Sloans rotations which are not based on match ups or even the best combinations. Okur and Boozer should not be on the floor at the same time.
Sloan needs to cut Boozer's minutes until he demonstrates he can play. Ditto for Millsap. Boozer will not and should not be with the team next year. The Jazz owe him nothing. The way he is playing he can be replaced by just about any role player or journeyman out there. Koufos is better right now.
The problem is with the expectations and how the Jazz lost. The preseason seemed to indicate the Jazz would be good and the Boozer experiment was working. Then the real season started. The Jazz play well for 3 quarters and then fold like a weak hand in poker.
The Jazz exhibit all of the same old problems. The fans know they had been snookered. They are mad and have good reason to be mad.
Sloan is a major part of the problem. He will not change nor make the changes that have to be made. He plays Boozer when Boozer's play hurts the team. He does his normal routine which has lost countless games over the years.
This year was supposed to be different. It won't unless Sloan changes or gets changed. ESA will empty with no change.
I also am a Sloan fan, but tonight he failed to coach and give his team a chance to win in the 4th. Use time outs, use your bench when the starters aren't playing defense. Right now I would sit your entire starting line-up except D-Will for the next game's beginning, to send a message to your players that those who play defense play the game. Starters might realize it is a privilege to start a game and not a foregone conclusion.
Total failure on behalf of coach and players tonight. Shake things up and teach some lessons here!
The really question you have to ask is this a defensive team. No. Defense wins Championships/games. Some of the players need to stop worrying about how much they make and come to work ready to work. I know some players that did this all the time and I don't have to mention their names becasue everyone knows who they are. When you put that uniform on you have committed your self to work and if you think just providing offense play is all you have to do. Then in the end you will suck. Like you are now. Sucking it up.
Now I know Solan will not let this happen because he is a great coach and knows what it takes to win, but what kind of motivation do you need to play hard every time you step on to the court. Its someone that will do whatever it takes to win for his team...and that is playing defense for the team.
