It looks like the LDS Church may need to move its headquarters to Texas since SLC has become one of the wicked cities of the world.
Steve | 9:05 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Really? SLC most liberal? Wow how much did that study cost? That is truly earth shattering!
zip | 9:20 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
I hope you didn't invest alot of money is this research, as it is so obvious that Salt Lake City is our most liberal city. Could you have pictured Rocky Anderson as mayor of any other city in the state? Still a great city with lots of great people.

I volunteer to help them move!
Oh Bob.... | 9:48 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Bob Kjar,
Don't you see? Downtown rising is an LDS sponsored product meant to tip the downtown political balance back toward thier values.
2,000 new LDS voting residents.

Conspiracy theorists arise!
To "Bob Kjar | 8:49 a.m." | 10:15 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Bob Kjar | 8:49 a.m.

Nobody said SLC is a "wicked" city. Your political philosophy doesn't necessarily make you wicked.

Stop over-reacting and painting with such broad strokes.

Church members and even church headquarters can exist in a city dominated by liberal politics and go about their lives just fine. They do it all the time. There are Mormons in EVERY city in the world you know. And they don't just shrivel up and die or move to Texas.

ss | 10:42 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Salt Lake City is turning into a liberal cesspool. I live in South Jordan and have zero reason to go into Salt Lake.
Me | 10:43 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
It's no coincidence, then, that it's also the best City in the State.....

Come on, right wing wackos, start your yelling!!!
Wrex | 10:45 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
It may be hard for Bob Bernick to believe, or maybe it makes him sad, but we don't actually wear labels in the city.

We're not jews in WWII Poland....
Cut it in half | 10:46 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Let's make sure the Republican gerrymandering continues. Cut Salt Lake county in half and sure each half is linked w/ a good old conservative rural region. We can't have SL County having their own free thinking liberal representative in Congress. The world would surely end!
Pagan | 10:53 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
'Could you have pictured Rocky Anderson as mayor of any other city in the state? Still a great city with lots of great people.'

Agreed.

Watch out Utah. Your capital city is home of radical free-thinkers! The humanity!
Liberal and proud | 11:00 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
The culture forces the liberal minority to congregate together. I work in Utah County, but I live in downtown SLC. There is just no way I could make myself live in a place as backwards as Utah County.
GW | 11:07 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
SLC better be happy that the Church Headquarters are there. Has anybody looked at the financial benifits of that? I think it is good to have polit ical diversity, it tends to keep things in balance.
Whoa Nellie | 11:14 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Be careful Becker. Being more progressive on social issues and the environment does not always equate to being right, smart, or better. Not all of your so-called progress is good progress when exposed to reality and truth. Some issues or aspects of issues may be progressive but not always.
Utah County | 11:25 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Utah County's reputation as the "kingdom of Conservatism" covers the entire state with it's blanket of Rebublicans.
If you have other views that differ from their majority, keep your mouth shut or watch out!
Just watch the news that comes from that part of the state!!!
Temples | 11:38 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Is that why the LDS is building so many Temples in the outlying areas of Utah?

Will they be moving "Temple Square"?
Anonymous | 11:42 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Who are the nutcakes who keep equating
Liberal with Evil and Wicked?

Such ignorance.

Jesus was Liberal.
No Wonder... | 11:56 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Salt Lake City always a budget deficit. You liberals gotta get those Davis County conservatives to spend more money.
SLC gal | 11:56 a.m. Nov. 3, 2009
First openly gay council member? And why exactly is that a big deal? Why not vote for someone for what they bring to the table vs. what they prefer to practice in the bedroom?
VOR | 12:27 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
I miss the old Republican Party, before they became the right wing nut-job hatemongers they are today.
Only in Utah!!!!! | 12:29 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
I am not from Utah but moved here a few years ago...only in Utah is the predominant faith such an issue for people in this state. No matter what the topic or discussion it is always brought up and bantered about for not revelvant reason. Grow up Utah...you may be a pretty state but some of the people here are so pig headed.
Jesus NOT liberal | 12:34 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Jesus didn't encourage laziness by forcefully taking from some to give to others.

Jesus help people accountable for their actions instead of using the liberal excuse that one's situation is never their own fault.

And Jesus didn't kill unborn babies.
wallofvoodoo | 12:44 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
I doubt downtown rising would bring an influx of conservatives downtown. If you have a lot of children, a condo isn't very appealing. I don't think the LDS chuch, Utahns & Mormons in gerneral even give it much of a thought. At least I don't. I find the diversity quite refreshing. Just wish they would get better parking arrangements there.
Jesus | 12:59 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
I love it when libs play the "Jesus was liberal/democrat" card.....

Jesus would have to support ABORTION, HOMOSEXUALITY, COMMUNISM to be a Liberal....fat chance!

I bet my life he is not a "lunatic lefty" .....
True | 12:59 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Liberal and lazy leads to economic and moral collapse. The inner cities of the U.S. (Detroit, SLC, Chicago, Bronx, etc.) are a cesspools and money pits. The generosity and patience of Utah helps minimize the SLC tradegy.
Anonymous | 1:01 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
I'm a GOP-voting Mormon who lives in Texas. I just declined a job in Utah *because* the office moved from SLC to S. Jordan.

Thank you for another fine example of liberal tolerance (sarcasm)

Salt Lake Mayors including Big Mouth Ralph have alienated the best of Utah for years....

I live in Draper, the only reason I go to SLC is to see a Jazz Game.....other than that I avoid it altogether......SLC is the Detroit of the WEST!

You can have SLC...it has nothing to offer anyone worth a damn....

You can have Pioneer Park, Marmalaude, strip clubs, Blue Boutique, and all "your" arts(laughing).....
Jesus  | 1:41 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Never said anything about Homosexuality or Abortion. What would Jesus have to support to be a Republican? Greed, intolerance, the death penalty?
He spoke out against greed, murder and intolerance, but never said anything about gays or abortion. Have a chat with him let me know how it goes?
Sanity? | 1:47 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
People say the dumbest things. I'm sure these dumb things started out innocent, you know, just trying to push someone else's buttons for a little fun, right? But then it just kept going and going, until one day, people started to believe these dumb they write on blogs.

Now mormons are backwards cyborgs who can't think for themselves and liberals are sinful, evil people who are ruining the world.

Liberals, conservatives, religious, agnostic, do we really stand behind the things we say on these blogs?

If so, I'm convinced the commentators here aren't the people I live and work with in this community. My friends, neighbors, colleagues, etc. are much more intelligent and thoughtful in the way they think and live.
JenM | 1:48 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
We need to start thinking of people as our neighbors and quit categorizing them based on political persuasion, religious beliefs, race, sexual orientation, ect. My husband and I live in Provo and would be considered "liberal" in our political ideologies. We love living here though, because we like the people we are around. I have no doubt many of them would disagree with me on many things, but we all agree that treating each other with respect and seeing each other as fellow human beings and neighbors trumps those disagreements. I still think there is a very vocal minority that is stirring up all the trouble. Most people, liberal or not, tend to share the "live and let live" philosophy in my experience.
Newsraptor | 1:56 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
With it's parks, cafes, walkable neighborhoods, cultural venues, TRAX, and progressive city planning, Salt Lake is looking more and more like the socialist hell that is Europe. All you Glenn Beck fans better get out now while there's still time!
SLC carries extra burden | 2:06 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
What happens to a drug addicted teen in Bountiful, or Provo or South Jordan? They seem to eventually end up in downtown SLC.

Where would a South Jordan man seek out prostitution? In downtown SLC.

The negative externalities from these suburbs all flow towards Salt Lake. As do the diverse members of those communities who can't find acceptance there.

Ralph Becker and the rest of us in SLC deserve some respect for making the best of a much more complicated social and economic environment. Any mayor can do well in a quiet bedroom community that exports anything that doesn't fit.
Educated | 2:19 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Reading some of the comments I see why the educated flock to the City- in Utah they are a minority- I wonder what the influence of the church headquarters has on SLC being a liberal city.
Speculation | 2:40 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
There is speculation in some religions that Jesus did speak on the subject of homosexuality - particularly the text in Matthew 19:12.

I found this article very informative. I am going to be moving to Utah soon and I now know that I should move to Salt Lake City. It sounds like it's better than than the rest of the state at least.

to think that if Abraham Lincoln, who was a Republican, were to have run his office like today's GOP, the slaves would never have been freed.
Glenn from Price | 3:14 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
If there is a "small pocket of liberalisim" in the city of Price, you would have to get a magnifying glass to locate that pocket. Having lived in Price two times previously, most of the local folks I know are pretty conservative in their leanings.

I moved to Salt Lake City from Davis County years ago (after living elsewhere).
Originally I was very proud of the City, but after 8 years of a hateful Rocky and more ineffectivness from the present administration, I have come to realize that Salt Lake will never get its act together.
The burbs are looking more appealing all the time.

BTW I have three college degrees and the arrogant comment by Educated | 2:19 p.m. is exactly why I think Salt Lake has dumbed down to appease the intolerant.
Guess who | 3:44 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Salt Lake City in becoming a stand still at this point and theres not much we can do about it.
User | 3:46 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
If we dont start fixing things now SLC will come crashing down.
Wow! | 3:54 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
I love my liberal city!....Its the oasis in the desert.
Sanctuary City | 4:53 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
In the next 5 to 7 years if current trends hold Salt Lake City Utah will be the next sanctuary city much like San Fran and others who openly defy and invite the nations illegal's to come on over and set up shop brining increased crime, increased drain on public utilities, etc, etc, etc... This is the reality that the residents of Salt Lake have voted for and the future they have chosen.
An Analogy | 4:57 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
SLC is to Utah what Austin is to Texas, a well educated, cultural oasis in a very conservative desert. I love it--and thanks for mentioning Park City, Moab and Springdale--they're pretty cool too.
Anonymous | 5:08 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
There are really only two types of people.
The LIBERALS and those who wish they could be more like them but through years of conditioning and negativity - simply cannot.
Davis County Resident | 5:28 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
You couldn't pay me enough to live in SLC. I hate the place. I have no reason to ever go to SLC except to see a Jazz game and Temple square. You can keep your cesspool of a city. And I know that the Mormon church is a favorite punching bag of the tolerant, liberal, left, but if it ever decided to pull its headquarters or the billions of dollars it puts into the city, the city would shrivel up and die. (hmmmm, not a bad idea. Lets go back to Missouri).
Lew Jeppson | 5:51 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
Salt Lake City is truly a great city, full of diversity of all kinds. Long live SLC!
