Professor Goldsmith, I will miss you, even though you didn't know me very well.

I don't think you realized that I sat in on your Evidence class every day so I could hear your stories and jokes (as well as prep for the bar), even though I wasn't even enrolled in the class and was actually enrolled in another class that met at the same time, a class I never attended until the last day of the semester and somehow pulled off a miracle on the final with my only preparation consisting of reviewing an outline exactly one time the night before.

But it was worth it.

I enjoyed talking with you on the way up to the Founder's Day dinner in Salt Lake, even though you laughed at me when I told you what I wanted to do with my law degree. lol. I even didn't mind getting a parking ticket after driving you to the RB so you could swim, the only exercise your body allowed at that point, even though it put me one ticket closer to being banned from driving on campus!

I had the great honor of working with Michael on the 4ALS Awareness campaign. Working and learning from Michael was an experience which I will never forget. All of us at the ALS Therapy Development Institute are saddened by his passing to say the least. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, as well as our commitment to continue his effort to ensure that an effective treatment for this horriffic disease is found and made available for all those that are sticken by it. Professor Goldsmith had a serious aneurysm almost 20 years ago that nearly took his life. I took his evidence class in 1994 and he constantly told us stories about his struggle to come back from that traumatic event. Although I cannot do it justice, my favorite was a story about a time when he happened to have two cell phones in his possession. He noticed he had missed a call to his cell phone and dialed to return it. Just then, someone called on the second cell phone so he answered it while his call was still ringing. He eventually realized that he had actually called one from the other. He could be very funny.

He also encouraged his students to read the New York Times if they wanted to know what was happening in the world. He didn't think that just reading the Trib and the DesNews would cut it.

Michael Goldsmith came into my life only a few years ago when I facilitated his meeting with our then Utah Governor, Jon M. Huntsman, Jr. He was seeking the Governor's support for federal funding of embryonic stem cell research and his "pitch" (no pun intended) was clear, compelling, and sincere without being overly emotional. Only toward the end of the discussion in the Governor's office did Michael inform us of his personal situation as a person with ALS. He was advocating for all who might benefit from such research, not for himself. Since that memorable introduction we became friends, and with his wonderful wife, Carolyn, too. We visited their spectacular hill side home in Heber City, dined at a friend's home and a fine Park City restaurant, and shared laughs while discussing a broad range of topics. I looked forward to many more opportunities for such exchanges, and will miss my friend, Professor Goldsmith. But who knows.... perhaps in another time and place. DAVID

I am one of my Michael's sisters, and these comments are incredibly heartwarming and comforting. I know that they're written in honor of Michael, and not for his family, but I want to let you know they really warm my heart.
