How about This? | 11:57 p.m. Aug. 1, 2009
Six or Eight man football...it's great for Texas and other states and it might expand the number of 1-A schools to actually give football a shot.
Coach K | 7:57 a.m. Aug. 2, 2009
If a school can play Fall baseball... It has enough to play 8 man football! The UHSAA needs to get everyone on the same schedule! An 8 team classification? Winning 1-A football is nothing more than a region championship. This is a mess!

1A Baseball | 2:34 p.m. Aug. 2, 2009
I know you football people will be upset with me for writing this, but will the kids from the schools that play 1A baseball be shorted again until state rolls around? Probably. Come on DES News you are better than that.
I know there are some school that would even struggle to get a 6-8 man football team. Schools like Manila, Tabby, GR, Wendover, Tintic, just to name a few struggle to field a team for baseball. I hear that GR only has 10 players again this year. Good luck football teams, and good luck to the baseball players as well.

Teams like Wayne, Piute, Panguitch, etc surely can't be smaller than Milford or Rich...Isn't it time to compete in a man's sport? Make 1A football competitive again. What about Dugway and some of the Salt Lake private schools. St. Joseph etc.?

If many of the smaller schools played football in the fall instead of baseball it would improve things in 1A football. then in the spring all the 1a schools play 1a baseball instead of the 1a teams that play football having to play 2a baseball and guess what 1a baseball would improve also...I mean come on wayne you guys must want to see if you could beat all the 1a teams in baseball as it is you really dint win the 1a state championship....not until you compete agianst all of them...those state championships would be that much more sweet....like all those Wayne wrestling tropies...true state championships

Milford high is doing both football and baseball this fall but real men play football. it wood be nice to see football in the fall and baseball in the spring for 1a sports
Cost of Football? | 10:20 a.m. Aug. 3, 2009
Do you even know the amount of money that would be needed for these smaller schools to play football. Not one of these schools have the equipment needed, many of them don't even have a football field to play. Fall is the best time to play baseball. There are hardly any rain outs and the weather is wonderful, if not too hot sometimes. I just don't think that these schools that are mentioned would be able to foot the bill to get into football season.

You wouldn't want to get wet...in the Spring.

Monticello better get back to its winnng ways
Anonymous | 9:58 p.m. Aug. 3, 2009
If there is a will there will always be a way. Milford has always had a football program and numbers never got in the way. Ether money or the size of the classes. They have always found a way to field a team. So can many more 1A schools. The question truly is do you want to play the sport or not. If not please get out of the way of the other 1A school so they can field a team of pride and success. 2A,3A,4A, and 5A play football in FALL and baseball in the SPRING. The time has come to join the rest of Utah.
Rich Rebels | 10:37 p.m. Aug. 3, 2009
I wished Kanab would have agreed to play Rich this year! I wish the 2A teams were still playing 1A. They were great compitition. If Region 15 would try one year, they would never go back. I know, still a dead horse. Region 16 will still be having all the fun in the fall.
$$$ | 6:21 p.m. Aug. 4, 2009
What about the schools that don't already have the equipment? The cost would be tremendous. I think it would be great to have all of 1A play football, I just don't see it happening.
Re: $$$ | 7:27 a.m. Aug. 5, 2009
How do you think all the other small schools got the equipment? Do you think it just magically appeared in the equipment room? SACRIFICE!!! If your school wants to play football they will find a way to do it.

Have you been living under a rock for the last couple years? There is a 150 mile traveling limit in effect this year to save money, and you're proposing we spend tens of thousands of dollars on football equipment? Wow

Maybe in a couple years this could be an option. You have zero sense of reality/practicality if you're arguing for it right now.
Re: Rich Rebels | 2:21 p.m. Aug. 6, 2009
I agree with "Rich Rebels." With these other larger schools gone, so is a lot of the tough competition. Now you have to go back to playing teams like Monument Valley and Whitehorse. These types of games are 48-0 at half-time. It makes winning a state championship less special when you don't have to earn it by beating the best.
been there tried that | 2:34 p.m. Aug. 8, 2009
It has not been that long ago when utah tried to setup 8 man football and the 1A schools voted it down. Schools like Panguitch, Wayne, and Bryce Valley were among the majority who voted it down.Talk about strange. A school without football lacks the traditions most people have come to enjoy in America. There is nothing like football in the fall and baseball in the spring. Start the school year with football, a tough, pull your pants up team sport and end the year with a laid back sport like baseball. Nice way to end the year. For many if not most schools, Friday night lights are a way of life and easily a money maker. But it is not going to happen. Too much startup money, too far to travel and out of the 1A comfort zone.

I belive that this is a good thing it makes us more competitive as a region.

No matter what your feelings are about 1A football, won't it be nice to see who is best in 1A finally?
Anonymous | 12:21 p.m. Aug. 24, 2009
Rich will have a cake walk too bad there are not some 2A teams to give them some competition.
Anonymous | 12:45 p.m. Aug. 29, 2009
I got a feeling that Monticello will be back at the top of 1A football again within the next couple years they got a new coaching staff that knows what needs to be done. GO BUCKS!!!
RE: Cost of Football | 1:30 p.m. Aug. 31, 2009
Ok so you say that fall is the best time to play baseball. I will have to disagree. Not only does the rest of the state play it in the spring but they play through the rain. I played for Milford for four years in the 2A ranks and not only did we play through the rain we played through the snow. Our 2007 playoff game at Juab was a whiteout and we still played the game. Yes we got killed by one of the best teams in the state that has since moved up to 3A but we still were a 1A team making the playoffs in 2A Baseball. Milford has since moved down to fall baseball and they are still competing in both sports. Beating White Pine in football Friday and following it the next morning by beating BVHS in baseball Saturday morning. 5 of those baseball players got home at 3A.M. and were the first 5 to the ball field the next morning after playing a complete football game so don't talk to Milford about the cost of football our boys love it and its not going anywhere!
