CEDAR CITY — An Alabama semitruck driver was killed after the vehicle slid off the road and crashed down a nearly 400-foot ravine Monday afternoon.

The westbound semi was transporting coils of steel along state Road 14 near Cedar City about 2 p.m. when the driver apparently lost control, went off the road and then went up and over the barrier, rolling down the ravine, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Cameron Roden. The driver was ejected and died at the scene.

Troopers reported that initial investigations indicate speed was a factor in the crash but are still looking at whether a mechanical malfunction played a part.

Roden said UHP is waiting to release the name until family has been notified.
