Women's volleyball: UVU, Weber State, Dixie State, SLCC notch victories
EDINBURG, Texas — Utah Valley University outside hitter Kayli Broadbent notched her sixth double-double of the year with 16 kills and 12 digs and Chelsea Fa'alogo also added a double-double with 33 assists and 13 digs in leading the Wolverines to a 25-12, 26-24, 25-20 Great West Conference victory over Texas-Pan American on Friday night.
The Wolverines are now 14-1 in the all-time series with the Lady Broncs and have won the last 10 matches in the series. Also, UVU remains in second place in league play at 9-2.
The Wolverines erased a 4-1 deficit in the first set and led by as many as 12 in the set. Broadbent had five kills in the set and a service ace. At one point in the set, Kathleen Stevens served eight straight points. In that run, Broadbent had three kills and the Wolverines led 24-12. Broadbent concluded the set with a kill.
Dani Robison and Chelsey Garfield had two kills each in the set.
The Wolverines (19-9, 9-2) trailed 23-16 in the second set before mounting a comeback led by Camie Manwill, who served five points, and Broadbent, who had three kills, including the last two to win the set 26-24.
"I thought we did very well defensively in the first set," UVU volleyball coach Sam Atoa said. "We showed a lot of guts and heart (in the second set)."
The third and final set was tied at 8-8 before UVU broke away and built a 14-10 lead on three kills by Manwill, a kill by Broadbent and two errors by UTPA (7-16, 4-7).
UVU led by as many as five points on several occasions. Leading 23-19, Manwill recorded a service ace to increase the lead to 24-19 and, after a UTPA point, Broadbent ended the set and the match with a kill.
Behind Broadbent's 16 kills, Manwill had seven and Sarah Clement had six.
Stevens recorded three service aces, and Allyce Jones led the Wolverines with 16 digs.
Utah Valley will close out the regular season at home next Thursday night when they host NJIT at 7 p.m. at the Shurian Family Activity Center. It will be the final home match for seniors Jones, Manwill and Marla Morin.
WEBER STATE DEF. SACRAMENTO STATE: At Sacramento, Calif., a week after losing a match in which they won the first two sets and then lost three in a row, the Weber State women's volleyball team won a match Friday night after losing the first two sets.
The Wildcats picked up a 3-2 win at Sacramento State late Friday to snap a four-match losing streak. WSU won the match 23-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-6, 15-10 to improve to 6-19 overall and 4-9 in Big Sky Conference action.
