Police Chief Sam Dawson and Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan will christen a new department station in the city's original downtown district Saturday with an open house.

The office, 142 E. Main (8720 South), was once the home of the Sandy City Jail. Now it will house the full-time offices of community policing officer Al Nortz and serve as a substation for Sandy patrol officers. The building, which was built in the 1880s, has been restored on the outside to give it an old-time police department look, complete with an original ball-shaped "police" light fixture above the door. Most of the work was completed by volunteers, and many of the supplies and fixtures were donated by local businesses.

The open house is free and begins at 11 a.m., with a dedication ceremony at noon. Refreshments will be served and there will be a display of antique cars and police memorabilia.

For information, call Sgt. Dave Lundberg, 201-2331.
