Web surfers who want an armchair tour of the United States can now see the first of 34,000 attractions from the Golden Gate Bridge to a windmill that started grinding grain in Bridgehampton, N.Y., 178 years ago.

Photos, detailed drawings and historical background are being scanned at the rate of 1,000 a day for the Library of Congress, which operates the site. They will cover about 28,000 buildings, including Indian pueblos built centuries ago in the Southwest and the first McDonald's restaurant. Also included will be 6,000 engineering projects such as bridges and parks. About 10,000 photos of the engineering projects are already online, and photos on all of them are expected to be available by the end of this year. Getting the engineering data on the Internet will take longer.

The Web site is (www.loc.gov) on the Internet.
