2 ARRESTED IN BEATING OF OFF-DUTY OFFICER

An off-duty Salt Lake police officer working security at a downtown liquor store was beaten and two transients arrested, investigators said.

Officer Lynn Burgon, a crime lab technician, was working at the No. 1 State Liquor Store, 205 W. Fourth South, when two people started hassling the clerk, officers at the scene said.Burgon asked the men to leave, told them he was an officer and then ordered them from the store. The men started punching the officer, cutting him in the face.

Two men, whose names were not released, were booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of assault on a police officer, said Lt. Norm Thompson.
