GRAPHIC UTAH: CRIME HONOR ROLL
Piute County had the lowest crime rate in Utah in 1987, with only 8.6 crimes reported per 1,000 population. This compares to a Utah average of 56.03. (Crimes counted in the rating were murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.) OThe Kol Ami Synagogue, 2475 E. Heritage Way, will join synagogues nationwide in leaving its lights on all night Wednesday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kristallnacht.
The lights will also stay on at the Jewish Community Center of Salt Lake, 2416 E. 1700 South.Kristallnacht, or "night of broken glass," was so named because on the evening of Nov. 9, 1938, the Nazi regime unleashed SS gangs on virtually every city and hamlet of the Third Reich, and they roamed the streets breaking windows, firebombing synagogues, rousting and beating Jews. Twenty-thousand Jews were sent to concentration camps that night.
"The Nazis attempted to put out the lights in synagogues all over the world, and so we let our lights shine," said Rabbi Frederick Wenger. The lights will be left on following a regular board of trustees meeting at the Kol Ami Synagogue, he said.
The nationwide commemoration is being coordinated by the Synagogue Council of America.
